High-Waisted vs. Low-Rise: Which Bikini Bottom Is Actually Right for You?

High-Waisted vs. Low-Rise: Which Bikini Bottom Is Actually Right for You?

Picture it: you're standing in the fitting room, you've got a high-waisted bottom in one hand and a barely-there low-rise in the other, and you have absolutely no idea which one is going to make you walk out feeling like that girl. We've all been there. You pull on one, then the other, then back to the first, and somehow end up more confused than when you started.

Here's the good news: there's no universally "right" answer, but there is a right answer for you. After 30+ years of helping women find their perfect fit, we can usually call it the second you step out of the fitting room. Let us walk you through it so next time, you can call it yourself.

The Case for High-Waisted

High-waisted bottoms sit at or above your belly button, and they have had a serious moment for a few years now — for good reason. They're the bottom that says vintage glamour with zero fuss.

What they do well: they smooth and hug your midsection, they stay put when you're actually doing things (chasing kids, jumping waves, playing beach volleyball without a single wardrobe malfunction), and they cinch in at the smallest part of your waist to play up an hourglass shape. There's a reason the pin-up girls swore by them.

Who tends to fall in love with high-waisted? A common misconception about bikini boutiques like ours is that we only cater to younger, thinner women. When it's actually the opposite! We have so many gorgeous women, mothers, grandmothers, of all shapes and sizes, and every body needs a good suit! That's why we love high-waisted, they offer comfort to everyone.

Brands we carry that nail the high-waisted cut: Billabong, O'Neill, Maaji, and L*Space. Shop our high-waist collection here.

The Case for Low-Rise

Low-rise sits down on the hips, well below the belly button, and it's the cut that whispers effortless beach babe. It's a little rebellious, a little throwback-2000s, and when it's done right it feels undeniably confident.

What it does well: it elongates the torso and lengthens the leg line, which is why it can be so flattering if you've got a shorter torso. It shows more skin (fewer tan lines, if that's your thing), and it leans playful and youthful — perfect for sunbathing, slow walks down the boardwalk, and resort-pool lounging.

Here's the honest catch, and you won't hear this from a department store: true low-rise is genuinely hard to find right now. So much swimwear is being cut high-waisted that even bottoms labeled "low rise" often sit higher than you'd expect. Our inventory is full of the lowest of the low, whether it's full coverage or a teeny brazilian.

Brands we carry that do low-rise right: Luli Fama, Body Glove, PQ Swim, Maaji again! Shop our low-rise collection here.

So... How Do You Actually Choose?

Forget the "rules" for a second. Here's what we actually ask in the fitting room:

What do you want to do in it? If you're swimming, surfing, running after little ones — high-waisted will stay put and let you forget about it. If you're mostly lounging, tanning, and looking cute by the pool — low-rise was made for that.

What feels like you? Some women feel most confident with a little more coverage and a snug, secure fit. Others feel most themselves showing a bit more skin. Neither is more "flattering" — flattery comes from fit and how you feel, not from a cut someone on the internet told you to wear.

And the big one — does it actually fit? This is where most people go wrong. A "perfect" cut that gapes at the back or digs in at the hip will never beat a different cut that fits you like it was made for you. Also — ignore size! Sizes run different in every single bikini brand, one of the perks that come with being a woman. A large in one brand can fit like a small in another. We always recommend trying your swimwear on whenever possible. Maybe somewhere like The Bikini Shoppe in Mission Beach ;)

Come Try Both On (With Someone Who Knows)

Of course, reading about it is one thing. Pulling on both cuts — in brands that actually fit, with someone who can hand you the right size under the door — is another thing entirely. Like I said, women's sizing jumps all over the place from brand to brand, and the bottom you swore you'd hate is so often the one you end up living in all summer.

So bring a friend, primp a little if that's your thing, and come see us at The Bikini Shoppe! We'll find the one that makes you light up the second you look in the mirror.

Because at the end of the day, high-waisted or low-rise, the right bikini is the one you feel gorgeous in. Confidence. Is. Everything.
